Mandatory child safety training is now in effect for every approved childcare centre in Australia. From 27 February 2026, updated requirements under the National Law mean that everyone working in or around an early childhood service must complete national child safety training. If you run a centre, work in one, or are planning to become an approved provider, here is what the new rules require, when the deadlines fall, and exactly who needs to complete the training.

What is the new mandatory child safety training?

The national child safety training is a set of online modules developed for the early childhood sector and delivered through the Australian Government's learning platform. It is designed to build a strong child safe culture across every childcare centre. Rather than focusing only on spotting abuse, the training covers how to create child safe environments, how to apply the Child Safe Standards in daily practice, what your policies and procedures should include, and the standards of conduct expected of every adult in the centre. There is a foundation level that everyone completes, and an advanced level for people in leadership and supervision roles.

When does it start? The key 2026 deadlines

The requirement came into full effect on 27 February 2026. From that date, all relevant staff must complete the foundation modules by 27 August 2026. People in management, supervision and leadership roles also complete the advanced modules once they become available. After that, the training is not a one off. Approved providers must make sure the relevant people complete it again every two years, so it becomes part of your ongoing compliance cycle. New staff who join after the transition period must complete the foundation training very soon after starting, and before they work directly with children.

Who needs to complete child safety training?

The short answer is almost everyone connected to the centre. That includes approved providers, persons with management or control, nominated supervisors, persons in day to day charge, educators, family day care coordinators, and also volunteers and students on placement. In other words, if a person works in or around the children in your centre, they are covered. It applies across long day care, family day care, outside school hours care, and preschool or kindergarten. The responsibility for making sure everyone is trained sits with the approved provider.

Child safety training vs child protection training: what is the difference?

These two are often confused, so it is worth being clear, because your centre needs both. Child safety training is the new national training described above, and it focuses on building a child safe culture and applying the Child Safe Standards. Child protection training is a separate requirement that focuses on recognising the signs of abuse and neglect and understanding your reporting obligations. In some states this is a specific module, such as the mandatory reporting training in Victoria. So completing one does not cover the other. Your centre is expected to meet both.

What this means if you are applying for Provider Approval

If you are applying for Provider Approval or planning to open a childcare centre, this matters for your application. Regulatory assessors will look for evidence that your nominated supervisor and key personnel understand and comply with the child safety requirements. Showing that your people are trained, and that you understand the difference between child safety and child protection obligations, signals that you are ready to run a compliant centre from day one.
